On India's 78th Independence Day in 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked his 11th consecutive flag hoisting at the historic Red Fort in Delhi. Undeterred by an overcast sky and light drizzle, the celebrations carried on with full vigour.
After raising the Tricolour, PM Modi received the 'Rashtriya Salute' from a contingent of the Punjab Regiment Military band, led by Subedar Major Rajinder Singh. The band played the National Anthem as the flag unfurled, adding to the patriotic atmosphere of the occasion.
Ahead of the ceremony, the Prime Minister extended his Independence Day greetings to the nation via his social media handle X, where he posted, "Independence Day greetings to my fellow Indians. Jai Hind!" Upon his arrival at the Red Fort, he was welcomed by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth, and Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane. The Defence Secretary then introduced Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, General Officer Commanding (GoC) of the Delhi Area, to the Prime Minister.
PM Modi proceeded to the Saluting Base, where he was presented with a general salute by a combined Inter-Services and Delhi Police Guard of Honour. The Guard of Honour was meticulously organised, featuring one officer and 24 personnel each from the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and Delhi Police. Commander Arun Kumar Mehta led the overall Guard, with contingents commanded by Major Arjun Singh (Army), Lieutenant Commander Gulia Bhavesh NK (Navy), Squadron Leader Akshara Uniyal (Air Force), and Additional DCP Anurag Dwivedi (Delhi Police).
This year, the Indian Navy was designated as the coordinating service for the Independence Day event. In an effort to enhance public involvement in the celebrations, around 6,000 special guests were invited to witness the grand event at Red Fort.

In his speech, PM Modi emphasised the importance of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) by 2047, aligning the nation's goals with the aspirations of its youth, whom he praised for their ambition and drive. He announced the creation of 75,000 new seats in medical colleges over the next five years, underlining the government’s commitment to strengthening the healthcare sector and ensuring a "Swasth Bharat" (Healthy India).
Acknowledging the contributions of the middle class, Modi vowed to improve their quality of life by minimising government interference. He also highlighted the government's efforts to modernise infrastructure and ease of living, stressing that the reforms introduced by his administration are driven by a "nation first" philosophy.
The Prime Minister also paid tribute to the country's women, announcing that maternity leave has been extended from 12 to 26 weeks, a move aimed at supporting working mothers and empowering women in the workforce. Additionally, he celebrated the growing financial independence of women, with 10 crore women joining self-help groups over the past decade.
PM Modi reiterated India's commitment to renewable energy, stating that the nation has made more progress in this sector than other G20 countries. He also highlighted the significance of the space sector, noting the surge in startups and the government's long-term vision to make India a global leader in this field.
In Nagpur, RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat hoisted the national flag, reminding citizens of the sacrifices made to attain freedom and urging them to remain united in safeguarding it.
This Independence Day, India not only celebrated its past achievements but also looked forward to a future of growth, unity, and progress.
At the Embassy of India in Japan, a vibrant flag hoisting ceremony took place to celebrate the 78th Independence Day of India. The event was marked by the unfurling of the Indian tricolour, symbolising the nation's pride and unity. Indian expatriates and embassy officials gathered to participate in the celebration, showcasing their patriotic fervour. The ceremony was followed by cultural performances, where students and members of the Indian community performed traditional dances and sang patriotic songs, reflecting the rich heritage of India. The event concluded with a message of unity and goodwill, resonating with the theme of 'Viksit Bharat @ 2047
